Chapter 12

Day 77 of the re-emerged Hat Island pack

Friday, Aug. 22 — Yakutsk

Abby woke up feeling more contented than she had in weeks. She turned toward the man in her bed, a sleeping Benny Garrison. He had felt like Benny for the first time since he’d contacted her through the bonds. She studied him. He looked thin and his cheekbones more prominent. He needed a haircut. She sought their bond, it felt strong. But then, it had, even when the wolf had been in full control.

She didn’t want to wake him. What if he was still not back in charge? What if he never regained control of his wolf?

Abby got up and went to take a shower. She felt Benny follow her into the bathroom. She turned to look at him.

His eyes were brown.

She felt such relief, she thought she’d black out.

“I’m not back completely,” Benny warned, as he started the shower for her. “I never will be, Abby. I have gaps in my memory. Large ones. I think I managed to save all the stories I carry, but I did it by jettisoning personal memories. And I don’t know which ones I tossed overboard.”

“The stories you carry are more important than personal memories?” she asked.

He was silent. “I hold the stories of the Cambodia pack,” he said with some difficulty. “They died. Almost all of them died under Pol Pot. The storytellers were targeted early. Anyone with education, who was respected for their minds, were destroyed in the first months. They saw it coming, and they packed those stories into my mind and sent me to Chang Mai. I should have found a student and passed them on years ago. But I didn’t. I thought I would have more time. I would have to find someone who spoke Khmer, no small task in itself. And so I put it off and did other things.”

He got into the shower with her. “Showering with someone has become my favorite thing,” she said with a smile.

“Favorite?” he teased. And she was heartened to hear him tease.

“Well, top 10,” she conceded. He laughed.

“When I was making the run cross-country, I realized I had screwed up. That I had let those Cambodian storytellers down. They trusted me, and I was going to end up losing their stories. And so I made the decision. Protect Ayta’s stories. Protect the Cambodian stories. And to remember Hat Island pack and you. Everything else was up for grabs.”

“Why lose any of it?” Abby asked, as she stepped out of the shower. She tried to corral her hair, unsuccessfully. Benny took her brush and worked his way through it. It felt good. Maybe she could hire him to do this for her every day? She felt his amusement.

“I’m not sure the biology of it,” he said. “But it’s as if the brain can only hold so much, and as the wolf’s thoughts grow in prominence, they also expand to take up the available space in the brain’s memories. You saw some of it.
